Maybe you are staying in an RV or a boat? Maybe, you are worried that the summer cooling expenditure is getting more every year? Perhaps you simply want to be prepared for a power cut? Why not build your own solar panels and get rid of all the problems in a nature friendly, clean energy way? That’s a real good decision, sure. Just make sure that you have done your homework properly.
Build your own solar panel from cuprous oxide instead of silicon as it displays photoelectric effect, which cause light to flow through the material when exposed to sunlight. The materials you will require are a half a square foot of copper metal sheet, two alligator clips, a micrometer to read 10-50 microamperes, even LCD multi-meters will do. You need an electric stove with a coil of 1100 watts also called a hotplate. Get a large 2 liter bottle of clear plastic and cut the top, 2 table spoons of table salt and tap water, some sand paper and metal shears to cut your copper sheet. Cut the copper sheet to the size of the burner of the hotplate, and then wash your hands and the metal sheet of all the grease if any.
To Build your own solar panel, polish the copper sheet to clear it of any oxides and sulphides and expose the pure shining metal underneath with the sand paper, you could also use the wire-mesh drill to speed up the process. Now place this polished sheet on the hotplate and set to the highest setting. You will see hues of orange; red and purple begin to appear on the plate as the oxidation patterns; the copper plate gets hotter and these colors oxidize into a black coat of cupric oxide. Continue heating the plate gets hotter and the black coat thickens and there is a layer of red, orange, pink and purple underneath. These colors disappear and the hotplate is glowing red now. Leave this setting for half an hour and allow the black coat to thicken.
Now turn off the burner, leave the copper plate on the burner and let it cool slowly. It is necessary to let the copper plate cool slowly as this causes the black layer of cuprous oxide to flake away slowly as the copper metal cools slowly it shrinks. As the copper plate cools the flakes pop off while the plate cools, it takes about 20 minutes for the plate to cool down completely. Now take the plate to the tap and place it under running water, and scrub the plate lightly and the flakes will come off in bits. Do not scrub hard or flex the plate as this will damage the red cuprous oxide needed build your own solar panel.
Now take the other half of the copper plate to build your own solar panel. Now bend both the cupper plates and fit them into the plastic bottle, they should not touch each other. The upper surface of the plate you heated should face outwards from inside the bottle, this is the cleanest surface. No attach one alligator clip to each of the plates. The other lead from the unheated but clean copper plate is linked to the positive terminal of the micrometer.
The lead from the cuprous oxide plate is linked to the negative terminal. Now mix the two tablespoons of salt hot tap water, until completely dissolved. Pour this water into the jar taking care that the alligator pins do not get wet, also fill the container leaving an inch at the top. You were assembling this device in the shade therefore the needle of the micrometer displays zero. Move it into sunlight, you will see the needle leap to about 30 micro amperes.
