GREEN DIY: SCAM?

Since installing solar panels so that everything in your home can run on free energy can cost up to $10,000 and more, people often ask me if Green Diy Energy System is a scam, or too good to be true since the claim as that you can do it yourself for less than $200.

Can you actually build your own Solar Power Panels and/or Wind Turbine for less than $200?? The answer is “Certainly! In fact, it often can be done for less that $150“! So rest assured, this is not some sort of “too good to be true” scam. The truth is that energy is and always has been abundantly free, and that with modern technology and convenience, it is possible to harness this energy for little cost!

They use to be the thing of farms but today they are seen in metropolises and industrial buildings worldwide. This is because they slash your electric bills or totally eliminate them! Here are instructions on how to cook up your own homemade wind turbines and meet all the energy requirements of your household.

Although this article is sufficient, for a more complete set of instructions visit:

CLICK HERE FOR ILLUSTRATED STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO BUILD HOMEMADE WIND TURBINES. VIDEOS INCLUDED!

The basic structure of a turbine is that it has blades which rotate and turn the dynamo placed in its base to generate electricity.

Previously, homemade wind turbines used to be used to draw water and grid the cereals now they have an added purpose. Today wind energy is being looked at as a source of power generation as it is renewable, non-pollution and alternative source of energy. There are readymade turbines available in the market but they are costly therefore here is an alternative of making homemade wind turbines. The blades of the turbine can be made out of wood or plastic. PVC plastic pipes are a good material for making the blades for your turbine.

They can withstand strong winds and can be painted with UV resistant paint to protect the blades from the sun which can make the plastic brittle over time due to the extreme heating and cooling high up there. Mark the outline of the blades on the pipe and cut it out. Cut and the brush the edges smooth with sandpaper. The blades are then attached to the hub which connects the blades to the DC motor.
Make sure that the diameter of the hub is equal to that of the DC motor this will ensure it will fit the hub well. Next connect the blades to the hub for this you will require a 6” pulley and a shaft equal to the diameter of the motor which would be a 1/4” steel pipe about 12” in length and 2” in width. The blades will be made out of a 48” long and 6” thick PVC pipe. The pulley should fit the DC motor shaft well so that the motor can turn.

Now drill a hole through the shaft and pulley and run a nut through this hole and tighten the bolt. Measure the circumference of the hub then divide it by the number of panes you want to fix say three panes. The circumference is 30 cm then make a mark every 10 cm and fix the blades in. This wind generating assembly should now be fixed on top of an asbestos pipe tower which can hold a DC motor.
Now use the wood such that the blade fits the shaft to extend from the hub. Insert the motor in the protective case on the tower. Now make a tail using steel and attach it to the assembly using a drill. Attach a pilot vane at the opposite side to the wind panes this will not only balance the front of the assembly but also protect the turbine from strong winds. There should be a controller between the battery and the turbine, due to the absence of the controller the battery may overcharge rendering it useless. A quality inverter will convert the DC into AC for use.

A practical metaphor, though, as you are not connected with the utility grid! More metaphorically so if you tend to think of society as the social grid. Off the grid living

CLICK HERE FOR A STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE ON HOW TO GET OFF THE GRID!

Living off the grid is a lifestyle for the free minded and self sufficient. It is an autonomous style of living; not being dependent on any one for the needs of life. A 2006 estimate showed that in the US, over the last decade the number of families living off the grid has increased by 33%. Current worldwide estimate suggests more than 1.7 billion people worldwide are converting to this awesome lifestyle.
Off grid living changes nothing except for benefitting us, as solar energy is used in power generation, distillation, heating spaces or cooling them and other used like sterilization of medicines, surgical instruments, clothes and others.

There are passive and active solar technologies used to capture and distribute the solar energy. The active techniques are the thermal collectors which collect the heat and distribute it via conducting medium like water and oil; photovoltaics are the other active technique of harnessing the suns energy, keeping our environment clean.

Off the grid living encourages the use of passive methods of harnessing the suns energy are mostly practiced in architecture where the orientation of the structure is in alignment to the sun. The materials used are indigenous and have light dispersing and have a thermal mass to maximize the use of heat and light of the sun and induce good ventilation. The solar cells are one of the greatest discoveries in the 19th century it has the potential to reduce the carbon foot print by humans by close to 65%.

Yet the greed for making money and our own illiteracy in environmental awareness has not allowed this discovery to make its impact today. There are many Do-It-Yourself projects which teach how to set up our own energy set up in these times of economic and environmental crisis. Off the grid living will give us stand alone energy setups will not only help reduce the users electricity bills but also abstain for partaking in the carbon dioxide emitted into the atmosphere due to the burning of coal, a non-renewable fossil fuel. Off
the grid

Three engineers were building transistors in the 1950s they discovered that if you use silicon in a certain way a photovoltaic cell was made. The solar cells did not obscure into oblivion due to the Satellite industry, as these served as a source of unlimited energy in space. As necessity is the mother of invention many inventions using solar and other renewable sources of energy were made during the 70s and 80s.

Today Off the grid living is encouraged and driven by the necessity the centuries-old practices are being studied and reprised and we have the double glazed windows to face the sunward side of the building, the use of skylights, insulated walls are all directed towards saving energy. Scientists are using the photovoltaic cells to make cars which run on solar-made electricity just like our satellites. The further development has been solar nanotechnology which is inspired by trying to understand photosynthesis.

Then there are solar paints and roof shingles which help in building energy efficient home designs. Imagine if the buildings could double as power plants, being covered with Powerglass, a layer of photovoltaic polymer applied in a layer over these high-rises which generates power for the building. The cost of these technologies is sustainable as they work out to be cheaper in the long run. Off grid living off the grid

Once inspired by off the grid living you begin to use these easily installable technologies you will realise the point which is being made here. The good news is that the change is imminent and sweeping in as people all over the world are waking up to these very obvious answers to many of their energy problems. It is also a struggle to break free of the dependency on non-renewable energy sources called the fossil fuels. The motto for this revolution is “free energy for all!”

The amount of insolation we receive in a day can meet the energy requirements of a 100 earths! If this weren’t true then why would Japan plan to put the largest solar panel array in space?! They call it the Space Solar Power System; the largest source of clean and inexhaustible energy. This ambitious project will be in space by 2030; the array, 5 times more efficient than any on the earth, will collect the solar energy and beam it down to the earth via laser beams and microwaves.

CLICK HERE FOR THE #1 ILLUSTRATED, STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE ON BUILDING YOUR OWN SOLAR PANELS FOR UNDER $200. VIDEO INSTRUCTIONS INCLUDED!!!

Each solar cell can produce a certain wattage of electricity, when you buy your solar cells check their wattage. To make your own homemade solar panels calculate your energy requirements and then choose the number of cells such that their wattage should total to your requirement. The other things on your list to find or buy are and inverter, wires to interconnect the solar panels, plywood, wood, glass or plexiglass, rechargeable batteries and tools.

Let us begin making our homemade solar panels. You begin by placing your solar cells on a board of ply wood. Check where the two wires are most stretched out, and make a hole in the plywood with a drill. Now pass the two wires to the other side; do this with all the solar cells you have placed on the board. It would help to firmly fix the solar cells in their place with silicon if you don’t have it, Araldite should do too. This prevents strain on the wires and prevents them from shaking, touching each other or breaking due to brittleness. Now when you have all the cells fixed and the wires at the back of the panel, connect them all in a series of parallel series. Fix these wires on the back of the solar cell’s panel; this will make them firmer and fixed in their place. At the end of all this you should have an unconnected wire at the beginning and at the end of the series or parallel arrangement of the solar cells.

Now either you could place another plywood board at the back to cover all these interconnected wires, Or make a frame such that the front or the faces of the solar panels are exposed to sunlight and covered with the plexiglass. The back of the frame could also be covered with a panel carrying the cells, fixed midway between the two covering panels comprising the frame. The later is a better idea as you have to weather proof your solar cells, you do not want rain to get inside your panels! Also, make a hole at the backside bottom of the back panel. This will offer ventilation and remove residual moisture. Now connect the two wires at the beginning and end of the panel you created to the rechargeable battery. Your battery will be charged in approximately 8 hours. Completing your homemade solar panels, attaching the inverter is to convert the DC current to AC which keeps your appliances running safely.

It will be a service to the earth and humanity as this is a non-polluting, inexhaustible source of energy. You can buy readymade solar energy systems in the market but they cost higher than the ones made at home. Solar panels need to be installed when you buy a solar panel kit; it comes with all the instructions. The biggest benefit of these panels is that they are cheaper compared to the commercial systems.

You can buy them online here and in the retail market; the whole setup may cost you $250. A solar panel kit comes with all the necessary components like the soldering iron, flux, solder, tabbing solar cells and step-by-step instructions of how to make the panel and use it. These panels are so simple that they can be used for classroom projects or for use at home. They can be built in custom sizes built to meet your needs perfectly.

One can build up to 1.5 kW panel arrays which can be easily be assembled by a child! The main part of the solar panel kit is the photovoltaic cells: these trap the solar radiation in the panel and convert it into electrical energy, facilitated by the photoelectric effect in the silicon chips embedded in the cell. The photovoltaic effect simplified is conversion of light (photos) into volts (electricity) at the atomic level. All the light absorbed gets converted into electricity. Therefore, you could enhance your system by reflecting light back onto the solar cells to enhance the rat of electricity generation.

The other components may be glass, plywood, plexiglass, wires, solders, a power inverter, switches, mounting devices, fuses, grounding system and a complete guide on how to use these components to build your solar panel. You can set up this panel in the backyard or on the roof where it receives full and maximum sunlight. The best part about a solar panel kit is that it begins to generate electricity as soon as it is set up. Attach rechargeable batteries allow them to charge for 8 hours you will have a ready source of electrical energy.

As the electrical energy is generated in DC you need to convert it into AC, this is done using an inverter. Your appliances can now be run safely. Once set up your faithful solar energy will last you a good quarter of a century, imagine the amount of money you would have saved by then. You begin to save 80% of your electric bill multiply the amount with the number of months in the 25 years, huge savings aren’t they?

Did that sound complicated?

The sun’s solar energy can be harnessed. The solar power cells store the solar energy as direct current in them. This direct current can be easily converted to alternating current with the aid of a special inverter called grid tie inverter. The photovoltaic cells and the grid tie inverter belong to the solar power unit of your home.

The grid tie inverter is an appliance which is specially designed to meet the needs of solar current. Another such specially designed electrical appliance is the solar charge controller.

CLICK HERE FOR A STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE ON BUILDING YOUR OWN SOLAR PANELS. USE YOUR SOLAR CHARGE CONTROLLER AND ELIMINATE YOUR POWER BILL!

The solar charge controller is also an essential part of the solar power unit. The primary function of a controller is to regulate charge flow in accordance to the conditions of the flow. For instance a 12 volts household utility controller will condition the charge flow to a maximum of 170 watts only and not more than that. The controllers are equipped to suspend the circuit and control the current flow in case of an excess current flow.

The two prime technologies applied by the controllers are the Pulse Wave Modulation (PWM) technology and the Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) technology. A PWM controller slowly pulses down the current flow in case of an emergency. This slow pulsing enables the solar power unit to maintain a optimal flow of current, even when there is too much excess charge flow in the circuit.

The MPPT controller has a unique operating principle. It is operated by using audio frequencies of very high range (20-80KHz). A MPPT controller works by comparing the voltage output from the solar panels with that of the battery voltage. So when there is a huge gap in these two values, for example on a cloudy day, the controller helps boost up the electricity production. The grid tie inverter systems are often equipped with an in-built MPPT solar charge controller. Another advantage of the MPPT over the PWM is that, MPPT has much less wiring requirement than a PWM.
The disadvantage of MPPT is that, their working can be disrupted in the presence of a high frequency noise source. Even, the high frequency wavelengths of a radio transmitter can disrupt the working of the controller.

Another important function of a charge controller in a solar power unit is to control reverse current flow in the circuit. This happen mainly during the night when the photovoltaic cells cease to work. Apart from this charge controllers also perform additional duties of short circuit protection and lightning protection.

A household solar charge controller typically weighs between 159 to 160 gms.(0.35 lb) approximately.

They look like the conventional shingles made out of asphalt. Solar shingles have solid solar panels the size of regular shingles. They come in strip and semi-rigid designs which contain several silicon solar cells. The latest designs have the more efficient film solar cells which make the solar shingles even more flexible. The solar shingles are an award winning design which made the roofs of commercial and residential buildings become electricity generators while protecting the inhabitants from the elements.

CLICK HERE FOR A STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE ON HOW TO BUILD YOUR OWN SOLAR PANELS FOR LESS THAN $200

The solar roof shingles are designed to blend in with the conventional shingles in the context of texture and surface. They are 219.71 cm long and 30.48 cm broad and can be nailed into place on the roof over 130 pound felt sheeting. There are 12 inches long electrical wires which extend from the underside and go through the felt into the interior roof connections.

After the solar shingles are place the heat of the sun seals them in place, known as the weather resistant seal. The size of the array can be varied according to the energy requirement. These shingles can produce 30% of a home’s energy requirements. These are useful in remote areas which are not connected to the electricity grid, therefore they are known as stand-alone. These are a good backup to compensate for blackouts and they can also be connected to the electric grid that excess electricity can be diverted to the grid for others to us. These solar roof shingles come with a 20 year warranty and they are hail resistant. In full sunlight they produce 120 watts of DC electricity. An array can be anywhere from 8 to 40 shingles and generate anywhere from 480 to 4000 watt of electricity in full sunshine. This would total to a good 580 kWh/month.

They can withstand winds up to 125 miles per hour. An inverter is a necessity as the electricity is made in DC and has to be converted into AC for the appliances to use. A battery bank of 40kWh is a good as a back up to store the power to compensate in the event of a blackout thereby allowing an uninterrupted power supply. It can be recharged everyday as the sun shines and its potential energy gets stored. The solar roof shingles can be fixed on the roof unlike the solar panels which have to be places on a rack on the roof or backyard, they are aesthetically pleasing too. It is a logical to pick the solar shingles over the regular ones and solar panels as they give a two in one benefit of roofing and clean energy. These PV shingles are purple or dark blue in color made of polycrystalline single solar cells, they are fitted with a P-N junction diode which converts light into electricity. The solar roof shingles come are a viable option as they not only provide us with free energy. Their cost is met within the first 2-3 years of installation and it is pollution free source of unlimited energy for the next 25to 30 years.

This device is a power inverter which converts the DC power produced by the solar power shingles or panels, wind turbine and other renewable energy sources into power which can be integrated with the national grid which runs AC.

CLICK HERE FOR A STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE TO INSTALL YOUR OWN SOLAR POWER SYSTEMS WITH A GRID TIE INVERTER SO YOU GET PAID!!!

Therefore this is the device that will help you convert DC into AC and supply and sell to the electric company; according to the 1978 Federal Public Utilities Regulatory Policies Act (PURPA) private citizens have the right to sell renewable energy to the local utilities company. This act was passed in the bid to achieve self sufficiency in energy sector during the 1973 petroleum embargo; anyone can sell excess energy to the electric company.

The grid tie inverter takes the direct current from the power sources like solar shingles and panels or wind turbine and converts it into alternating current which is the usual electric current you receive in your homes. This current is safe for to use for the appliances as AC is recommended to use in both of them.

The inverter turns 12 – 24 volts electricity which it gathers from the solar panels and wind generators and collected in the batteries into 120 volts, 60 cycles per second. This is the standard form of electricity that flows through the grid. Most wind and solar power systems come with the inverter which runs the appliances with this renewable energy.

However before you plug the grid tie inverter into the national power supply there are a few modifications required. The two systems have to be synchronized to cycle in the same phase, if the electricity from your inverter is going phasing up and that of the grid is phasing down then a grid tie inverter synchronizes them.

Just like water, electricity too flows from a higher level to a lower level or from a higher voltage to a lower voltage. Therefore when the high voltage power source is connected to a lower voltage battery a flow of current is setup and the battery begins to accumulate power. This is necessary to bring the voltage in your system higher than that of the grid so that the electricity begins to flow towards the grid.

A gird tie inverter monitors the flow of voltage in the grid and your system and then outputs slightly higher voltage than the grid. This causes current to flow into the grid and your electric meter runs backwards than forward you don’t owe money you make money from the electric company.

The reason why a grid tie inverter is costly is because it does so much work of matching cycles and controlling the output besides just converting the DC into AC. But in the long run the machine which seems costly now might turn out to be a money making machine which allows you to put the extra electricity made by your system onto the national grid and make money off it.

So, keeping the ancient tradition alive are the solar power water heaters that meet our heating needs of today. Simply put, solar panel water heaters are arrays of photo electric pipes through which a working fluid circulates to and fro.

It can cost you anywhere from $8,000 and up to get solar power water heaters installed. Fortunately, you can save THOUSANDS if you do-it-yourself!

CLICK HERE TO GET THE STEP-BY-STEP BLUEPRINT TO BUILD YOUR OWN SOLAR POWER WATER HEATERS!

Solar panel water heaters can help remove your carbon footprint from the environment as at an average a four member family requires 6500 kWh of electricity each year to heat their water.
If the electricity on your grid is coming from the conventional sources then the system would be only 30% efficient and would be releasing 10 tons of CO2 every year, just like out automobiles do.

If the family used an oil-fuelled water heater then they would contribute 3 tons of CO2 annually. Statistically the amount of CO2 released into the atmosphere by the water heaters in your homes equals the total CO2 produced by total number of trucks and cars in the USA.

Consider this if even half the number of homes was to use solar panel water heaters then the CO2 emissions would reduce as much as increasing the fuel efficiency of our cars by a factor of two! Well, it looks like this is not going to be difficult as more and more people are turning to using solar power water heaters as their long term environmental and money saving benefits is very obvious to everyone.

As long as there is sufficient sunlight, the solar panel water heaters can work in any climate and 1.6 million solar power water heaters are already installed. As more and more people are realising that within 4 to 6 years the solar water heaters pay for themselves.

The solar heater once installed lasts for 10 to 40 years therefore after the initial cost there is none and only benefits besides free hot water. The government also offers incentives like 30% or up to $2000 rebate for the cost of installation of solar power water heaters.

Unfortunately though, these government benefits have not been extended to the hot tubs and swimming pool heaters. It is also required to get you system certified by local authorities for safety certification.

Solar power water heaters look like skylights when looked at from a distance. One or two of these panels suffice for a standalone home of a family of four. These are placed on the roof and are about 10×4 feet in area. The cold water pipe is connected to the solar storage tank; the water to be heated is circulated between the solar collectors and the storage tank.

The water collected in the storage tank gets heated to the good extent then this water is fed into the conventional water heating system. The water gets heated further by this conventional water heater.

If the solar power water heaters are properly designed they can provide up to 70 percent of the hot water requirement. There are formed plastic collectors, flat plate collectors and evacuated tube collectors to choose from in the commercial options.

If these are too costly or you like to try your hand at making things then there are many DIY projects available on the internet to choose from. There are guides, forums and blogs which discuss and offer advice on building your own solar power water heaters.

Homeowners have varied responsibilities besides paying the utilities bill. The wind turbine can be easily installed at the top of a tower to collect all the kinetic energy of the wind and convert it into electrical energy and used to run home appliances. Wind power for homes has many, many benefits that we will discuss.

CLICK HERE FOR A COMPREHENSIVE, STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE ON HOW TO BUILD WIND POWER FOR YOUR HOME!!!

A windmill is an ancient device that converts the kinetic energy of the winds to different usable forms of energy. The concept of utilizing the wind’s hidden energies for various uses has always been a popular new entrepreneur theme throughout the 18th and 19th centuries. In fact, it is quite surprising that although the windmills have been around all along, they have yet been greatly intimidated by the predominance of fossil fuels. Still, they have not gone extinct, though. Once immensely popular, the windmills slowly got pushed to the background. In Northern America, until the 1930s the windmill sector was a very active sector. But the economic depression of the 1930s coupled with the up selling of fossil fuels, forced it to the background.

Generally these systems are supplemented by the local utilities service. This is because just in case the wind speeds drop and no electricity is generated due to the turbines not turning, then the electricity flows in from the utilities service. If the wind speed increases and the turbine spins to generate excess of electricity it can be passed on the grid for the community to use after even if the batteries are fully charged.

As the setup has been made at the time of installation of the system this pass-on happens automatically and the meter too keeps the count by itself. The modern wind energy for home systems link you directly to the grid therefore you don’t even need to spend extra on the batteries and inverters. wind power for homes

These are a perfect for the remote places where the national grid has not reached yet and the places which enjoy the utilities can look forward to 90% cut in their electricity bills. You would be delighted to know that the all-electric homes run on this renewable energy can have monthly electric bills of $8-15 for three quarters of the year. wind power for homes

In the places where there is requirement of an air-conditioner the bill can be even lesser. Therefore the cost you incurred in building the windmill will be met with within the year of installing it in the form of the bills you didn’t have to pay and the money you made by selling power to the state.

But the factors you should consider before you get excited are what is the wind speed at your site is, is it constant day and night, how much electricity you use, and few other factors. Wind energy for home in urban and suburban areas from large windmills is not advisable.

Therefore small turbines less than a meter in diameter are recommended they can be placed upon a tower or made into an array just like the solar panels and placed atop the houses, sides of the buildings and high-rises. The basic requirement to check for before you get a wind turbine is a wind speed of 10 miles per hour that should work up to 10 cents per kWh of generated electricity.
Wind energy for home is prevalent in 47 of the 50 States and most have been installed in the North-eastern and the Midwestern states. They are popular because at no stage of energy production does the wind turbine produce pollution, which you electric provider does.

See if you like this statistics, a small wind turbine in its lifespan can pervert the release of 1.5 tons of air pollutants and 300 tons of green house gases like Carbon dioxide and methane. Wouldn’t you like this direct opportunity to contribute to saving the environment?
