Well it is not much of rocket science either. In fact, mankind have tried and harnessed the power of wind since long, long ago. Are not the sails of a ship governed in accordance to a wind? The wind turbine or wind mill is a pretty primitive device that captures the kinetic energy of the blowing wind and converts the kinetic to electrical with the help of a motor generator.
So, the components of a homemade wind turbine typically are the blades, the mount on which the blades will be attached, the tower to get the elevation and the wind, a shaft and the generator. The blades will move automatically in the wind, clockwise or counterclockwise as they are devised, producing valuable kinetic energy. The wirings and bearings also play their part. The kinetic energy will then be converted to direct electrical current by the generator of the turbine. The direct current is a free current. It is free of utility grid. In fact, it can be changed to alternating current and sold back to the utility grid for a price. This service is known as ‘back metering’.
The wind turbine system is a green system, producing clean energy. No kind of air or water pollution is done by the windmills and they are not noisy. The location of a windmill is a crucial determining factor behind its functioning. The location should be such that it receives a uniform supply of air throughout the day. Unlike solar panels windmills can also function during nights. To get this elevation and wind mills have traditionally been installed on raised grounds or at places which are adjacent to a large water body.
In a basic design you will make an axle and attach the fins or fantails to it which will turn on steel gears. The components should be so installed that the sails fix well on the axle and turn when one gear meets another perpendicularly. The gear will turn the axle which in turn will run the mill or the dynamo at the bottom of the mill.
The axle is attached by another gear and pole to a dynamo when turns to generate electricity. This dynamo is connected to a rechargeable battery and inverter. The battery stores the electricity generated and the inverter converts the direct current from the battery into alternating current which is safe to use in our appliances
