The windmill harnesses the potential energy of the wind and converts it into mechanical energy. The wind gets trapped in the blades or the wings and turns the nacelle converting the wind into useable mechanical energy which used to draw water and grind corn earlier. To learn how to build a windmill here are a few basics one should know. The Windmill is made of a base, tower, nacelle and blades.
The nacelle is the gearbox which allows the blades to turn. Learning to make these basic structures and assembling them will give you your basic windmill. But if you are interested in learning how to build a windmill in a high – tech version, then there are many to choose from in the market which is readymade or you could even buy their construction plans online.

But of course if you can do it yourself, the materials required to make them with your few hours of labour will greatly benefit you by saving thousands of dollars!
The basic and indigenous windmill is still a viable option, though. The higher you go into the air the lesser the obstructions in the flow of the wind therefore the first point to note is that your windmill should be as tall as possible. The wing blades should be able to catch the wind easily so that the blades turn with least resistance converting the mechanical energy of the wind into usable energy.
Generally the windmills have a horizontal axis on which the blades turn in a vertical direction. The windmills are also called wind turbines as they can be modified to convert the mechanical energy into electrical energy. The blades of the windmill are similar to the blades of a propeller of a plane.
They are used to capture the wind which in turn pushes the nacelle to turn. The wind blades can be made of wood, plastic or even canvas as used by the Dutch. The size of the wings can vary according to the size of the windmill you want to make.
Generally a five foott tall windmill will require 2-3 feet long blades. The important point in learning how to build a windmill is building the base. It is supposed to be heavier and stronger than the rest of the structure.
A strong base allows the structure a firm base which does not get blown away by the wind and offers resistance to the wind. Therefore the wind moves only those structures that should move; here they are the wings of the windmill. You can make the base heavy by placing a sandbag, concrete, rocks at the base of the windmill.
If your windmill is 5 feet tall its base should be around 10 kilograms in weight with the area of the base around 40 square centimetres. The windmill tower should be five feet in height made of a strong piece of any material you are using to build the turbine like plastic or PVC. The nacelle could be a simple shaft where all the panes of the windmill meet which can be fixed in the tower such that they turn as the wind blows and your basic lesson on how to build a windmill is complete!
